Let’s be honest, the best thing about going to the movies is the snacks. That satisfying crunch from the buttery popcorn, to the perfectly sweet M&Ms, movie theater snacks enhance the overall cinematic experience. While we have grown accustomed to enjoying the typical assortment of snacks: nachos, popcorn, pretzels, etc., other countries around the world seem to have their own take on things. Here are a few examples of what movie theaters around the world offer their visitors in terms of snacks!

India: Indian cuisine is known for its spice and flavor- when it comes to their snacking, it is no different. While you can choose to munch on popcorn during the movie, Indian movie theaters also sell freshly fried samosas. Samosas are crispy pastries with a savory filling. These snacks are perfect for the movies as they offer that satisfying crunch! Another popular snack in India are egg puffs.

South Korea: South Korea offers a wide variety of different snacks to the movie-goers. One of the favorite snacks is warm, sugary churros. These churros are fried to perfection and served with ice-cream and chocolate sauce. For a savory option, movie theaters offer dried squid with butter, with some theaters featuring different flavors such as honey butter!

Egypt: In Egypt, crunching on seeds is extremely popular at the movies. The most common types of seeds that are enjoyed are pumpkin and sunflower seeds. Half of the enjoyment of these snacks is cracking the shells of the seeds open in your mouth before removing it and eating the seed itself.

Netherlands: In the Netherlands, salty licorice is the snack of choice! Although black licorice is a controversial snack in the US, its popularity in the Netherlands seems to be unfaltering. The bite sized candy is a convenient snack for the movies and can be found in most movie theaters.

South Africa: South Africans change things up by adding a sweeter element to their popcorn. Astros is a candy coated chocolate that many South Africans like to enjoy with their popcorn. The mix of sweet and salty is just what you are looking for when it comes to the perfect movie theater snack!

China: Movie theater snacks have a reputation for being quite unhealthy. In China however, fruit is a popular choice. Dried plums that are slightly salted offer a unique flavor combination that is somewhat addicting. Munching on this snack will keep you full and satisfied for the duration of the movie.

Saudi Arabia: In Saudi Arabia, you can find the typical snacks like popcorn and nachos but if you need something more filling, some movie theaters sell Shawarma. Shawarma is a wrap most commonly filled with marinated chicken or beef. This snack is perfect for any time of day and is convenient to eat.

Brazil: In Brazil, a common movie theater snack is Pão de queijo. These are fried cheesy dough balls. Easy to eat and beautifully golden, this mouth-watering snack is very popular among Brazilians and is slowly gaining popularity around the world too!

Philippines: In the Philippines, a popular movie theater snack is Kwek Kwek: battered, deep fried boiled eggs. This snack can be enjoyed with a variety of different sauces and is perfect for mindless snacking. Sometimes they are served on a stick, making it convenient to hold while sitting in the theater.

Italy: Italian food is known to be delicious! This is something that stays true when it comes to their movie theater snacks. In Italy, it is common to find mini pizzas or calzones sold at the movie theater. The combination of cheese and carbs is exactly what you are looking for when enjoying a movie.

Next time you are visiting a country, be sure to check out the movie theater to enjoy their take on the perfect movie snack!
