10 Foods Buzzfeed Suggested & If They’re Worth Trying
By: Becca Gmerek
Buzzfeed is known for popping up on our Facebook feeds with videos showcasing trendy treats all around NYC. Well, I decided I would actually go out and try some of these snacks! Here’s my list of 10 foods they recommended and what I honestly think of them:
1. Cha Cha Matcha
What I ordered: An iced coffee
Now, I know what you’re thinking… “You went to a place known for their matcha and you ordered coffee??” Yep, I did. Even though I don’t like matcha, I cha cha’d my way over to Broome St. for the Instagrammable tropical, retro interior and it did not disappoint. I got my iced coffee and sat down in a lawn chair next to the faux grass wall and Snapchatted my heart out!
Do I recommend: If you like matcha, yes! Their iced coffee was fine, but I can’t blame them for that considering they’re known for their matcha and not their coffee. When I was there everyone seemed to be enjoying their matcha concoctions!
2. Milk and Cream Cereal Bar
What I ordered: Vanilla ice cream blended with cookie crisp cereal, strawberries on top, red velvet cone
What I love about Milk and Cream Cereal Bar is that you can design your own ice cream! You can choose from 18 different cereals and add in whatever toppings you want and then pick out a colorful cone for all of it to go in. Located in Nolita, it’s perfectly placed for you to go enjoy a nice day of shopping in Soho and then grab a hearty dinner in Little Italy!
Do I recommend: Absolutely. The second I saw this on Buzzfeed I knew I had to try it. Milk and Cream blends two of my favorite things, cereal and ice cream! And if you’re not in the mood for ice cream, they’ll make you a personalized bowl of cereal. What’s not to love?
3. The Bagel Store
What I ordered: Rainbow bagel with plain cream cheese
Everyone has seen pictures of rainbow bagels, but not everyone has tried them. The Bagel Store sells rainbow bagels, unicorn bagels and special holiday bagels! You can also have custom bagel art for your events.
Do I recommend: More of a one time visit. The bagel itself was fine. NYC bagels have raised my standards quite a bit, so the bar was already pretty high! If nothing else, the colorful bagels make for great pictures.
4. Tipsy Scoop
What I ordered: Raspberry Limoncello Sorbet and Mango Margarita Sorbet
If you couldn’t tell from the name, Tipsy Scoop serves alcohol infused ice cream. All of their flavors are inspired by classic cocktails, like Red Velvet Martini or Frose All Day. If you weren’t already sold on Tipsy Scoop, they also offer happy hour where you can get any two scoops for the price of one
Do I recommend: For sure! You can even order online and get it sent to you anywhere in the United States or have them cater your next event.
5. Baked by Melissa
What I ordered: Pretty much one of everything
Baked by Melissa sells miniature cupcakes, macarons and muffins! At any point in time they offer roughly 15 different flavors of each treat with a rotating roster depending on the season. You can get packs that range anywhere from 6 to 100!
Do I recommend: Yes, but I wouldn’t make regular stops here. These bite sized treats are adorable and tasty… and they disappear way too quickly. The appeal of Baked by Melissa is the size of the desserts, however as a broke college student, the cuteness wears off quick once I realize I’m paying a dollar for one bite of food that should probably cost 50 cents.
6. Pommes Frites
What I ordered: Fries, duh
Pommes Frites serves Belgian style fries, hence the name Pommes Frites which means french fries. I visited their booth at Smorgasburg and there was a huge line (which you just have to accept because it’s Smorgasburg and there’s always a line). The smell of the truffle oil was so strong you just have to stop there! The hook with Pommes Frites is their sauces, because Europeans eat their fries with everything but ketchup so now Americans can try those sauces.
Do I recommend: Sure! I ordered the original fries and they were good but honestly, they’re just fries. Pommes Frites is best known for their truffle fries so I feel like I can’t give it a fair assessment until I give those a shot!
What I ordered: Funfetti and The Classic
Schmackary’s is located in Hell’s Kitchen, right near Broadway. Every year they hold a charity event called Broadway Bakes. Some of Broadway’s biggest stars work behind the counter at Schmackary’s to raise money for charity. Half the money and all tips are donated. You can’t beat sweet treats and charity!
Do I recommend: Yes! Nothing is better than a warm cookie. It’s a great snack year-round, but it is the best winter snack paired with their warm hot chocolate! (I’m drooling as I type this)
8. Artichoke Basille’s Pizza
What I ordered: One giant slice of artichoke pizza
If you like creamy spinach artichoke dip, then Artichoke Basille’s Pizza is the place for you! Open 24 hours, this is a go to for many New Yorker’s after a night out. If you’re willing to wait in line, it’s definitely worth it.
Do I recommend: 100% The restaurant is small but the size of the slice more than makes up for that!
9. John’s Juice
What I ordered: Pineapple juice
John’s Juice lives by the slogan “All Juice, No Cups” because they are determined to be fully compostable. They offer fruit juices directly in their natural form! You can order watermelon juice in a watermelon, orange juice in an orange, grapefruit juice in a grapefruit, among many others.
Do I recommend: Yes. I tried this at Smorgasburg in Brooklyn and it was delicious. My only complaint would be that the line is always incredibly long and they’re a bit pricey. But definitely something everyone should try at least once!
10. by CHLOE.
What I ordered: Mac n Cheese, Pesto Meatball, Kale Artichoke Dip
by CHLOE. serves all plant based foods baked and prepared from scratch. Their menu is fully vegan and their ingredients are all locally-sourced!
Do I recommend: If you’re vegan yes, otherwise, maybe not. I’m a big mac n cheese gal and I was told the mac n cheese tasted just like real cheese so I was excited to try a new version of my favorite dish! However, it was very clear that it wasn’t cheese and I honestly couldn’t finish it. But I gave it another shot and ordered something new the next time and that ended up tasting great. It just depends on what you order I guess!
